GRAD CEREMONY POLICY

Our Graduation Ceremony Policy states that to participate in the graduation ceremony, a student must meet the following four criteria:

1.      They must be in an academic position to graduate by the end of the third term in their grade 12 year;

2.      They must have completed 30 hours of work experience, 80 hours of documented physical activity and completed a graduation transition plan and exit interview;

3.      They must have cleared all debts owing to the school by the end of third term; and

4.      They must be in good standing with the school (e.g. good attendance and behaviour etc.)

In meeting the first criteria, the following process will be followed:

A student’s status as a “grad” is determined in September by his or her “potential to graduate” by June of that school year.  The term “potential to graduate” will be taken to mean that the student has at least 60 credits coming into grade 12.  With a minimum of 60 credits, he or she comes into the year with; a graduating student must also have the potential to complete 24 additional credits during the year to meet the required minimum of 80 credits for graduation.  Among his or her courses, completed or proposed, he or she must have all of those required for graduation (e.g. English or Communications 12, a Science 11, a Math 11).  Students on Individualized Education Plans (IEP) will meet graduation criteria by completing the goals of their learning plans, which lead a School Completion Certificate.

The first review of students designated as “grads” will be undertaken the beginning of February after the first semester’s results are gathered.  In March, our Administrative and Counselling team will post a list of those students who are on the grad ceremonies list.  A student who no longer has the potential to graduate as a result of his or her remaining course work in that school year, would be excluded from the graduation ceremonies list.  This review process is repeated at the end of the third term and if students are not in a passing position at this time in courses, which they require to graduate, they would also be excluded from the graduation ceremonies.

In meeting the third criteria, students must pay to the school all unpaid bills – student activity fee, optional project fees in courses, the grad fee and any textbook replacement costs or late fees to the library.  Students with concerns regarding financial issues can speak directly with the Administration.

In meeting criteria four, students must be responsible for their attendance, behaviour and decorum throughout the school year as they represent our school, community and school district.

Students who are excluded from the graduation ceremonies have the option of filing a written appeal to the Principal outlining any extenuating circumstances that may have caused the student to be in a non-graduating position.  The Principal will then consult with a committee made up of graduating students, staff, and parents, to make a final decision regarding their participation in the graduation ceremonies.  The intention is to make this final decision no later than one week prior to graduation.  In some instances, the school’s School Based Team and/or School Planning Council may be consulted.
